All these coils are going to improve SNR (signal-to-noise ratio) of the images and/or imaging time.

It is important that all current users plan their experiments with this upgrade in mind. This means that there will be a downtime of approximately 2 weeks some time in Dec 2012 when the installation is going to take place (more details will be sent later, closer to the date, when Bruker informs us of the detailed plan). Furthermore, those of you applying for funding from Helse Vest (deadline Sep 15th) or other sources might want to include this information in their grant application and budget for a slightly increased cost of the MRI after the upgrade (around 400 NOK/hour).

Last, but most important, EVERY user will have to be trained to use the new equipment before being given access to the new system. We will most likely offer a course after the upgrade to train people most effectively, but we can also address individual needs and offer specialized training.

From August 2011 www.mrieducation.com is pleased to announce that there will be a suite of eight MRI in Practice apps available from the iTunes store. These apps will allow users to purchase a series of electronic presentations that summarise some of the popular topics from the live MRI in Practice course offered by the authors of the popular book MRI in Practice.  For info on the application click [http://www.mrieducation.com/apps/mriipintro.html here].

  • Upgrade of the 7T Pharmascan

MIC is happy to inform you that a major upgrade of our MRI equipment was performed in Dec 2012. This upgrade included the following:
1. New animal beds for mice and rats;
2. New RF coils: this will include new volume coils (similar design as what we have now, but improved hardware properties), surface coils for mouse and rat brain imaging, and surface coils for imaging tumors close to the skin, for instance implantations on the extremities. All these coils are going to improve SNR (signal-to-noise ratio) of the images and/or imaging time;
3. New shim system: the new shim system will improve magnetic field homogeneity which will especially benefit spectroscopic, diffusion and perfusion imaging;
4. New gradient coil: the new gradient coil and gradient amplifier will be able to deliver more than 2 times (760 versus 300 mT/m) the gradient strength we have now. This will improve especially measurements of diffusion, but also in some cases resolution of the images;
5. New computer controlling the imager: more storage space, better RAM.
